Process
- Contact us with details about your project.
- A free intro call or site walk where we discuss your project in greater detail and determine high-level needs
- If it’s a good fit, we’ll develop a scope of work, fees, and timeline to make your vision a reality
- Phase 1: Project Interview, Site Measure, and Schematic Design. We explore design solutions to meet your needs. This typically involves several rounds of design revisions to ensure the design is truly solving the problem. If we like the direction of the designs, we move to Phase 2.
- Phase 2: Design Development, Construction Documents, Permitting, Contractor/Bid support. This is where we get into the finer details! The end result is a fully permitted, build-ready set of Construction Documents.
- Phase 3: Construction Administration. I'll help to oversee that the construction is progressing according to the drawings, and help navigate any changes or additions to the original scope, as necessary.
FAQ
Is SMASH design a one-stop shop for my project?
SMASH design is where your project starts but we don’t build it ourselves. Architectural Design Services help you plan out the best version of your idea, and help give you a realistic understanding of the full scope of work, so you can then connect with a builder to refine the cost and timeline. When it comes time to build, you can either use your preferred builder, or we can recommend a builder from our network we think would be the best fit for you.
Do I need an architect? Can I go straight to a builder?
Many people go straight to a builder with smaller projects and are happy with the results. But the larger the project gets, the more likely the end result won’t match up with your specific vision (not to mention timeline and cost evolving out-of-scope). Architectural services help you get a clear understanding of the end picture before you even start, and we stick with the project through the build as your advocate to make sure everything goes according to plan.
Is an architect the same as an engineer?
Engineers are a separate professional in the equation. Here’s how we usually explain it to people:
- Builder: always needed. The job doesn’t get done without the builder!
- Architect: usually needed. Architects develop the design, figure out the final details of the entire project upfront, and advocate for the client to help keep projects in scope.
- Engineer: usually needed. If a load-bearing wall is moved, or an external wall or window has a major change, or a new structure is built, a structural engineer is brought in to assess the impact. There are some projects that don't include any structural adjustments, and thus a Structural Engineer would not be needed.
While SMASH design doesn’t offer structural engineering services directly, we have plenty of great engineers in our network at your project’s disposal.
